🛩 Safety Pilot Board
Find a Part 91.109 safety pilot for simulated instrument flight — or offer your services. Split rental costs and build hours together.
What is a safety pilot? Under FAR 91.109(c), a pilot flying under a view-limiting device (hood) must have a safety pilot holding at least a Private Pilot certificate with category and class ratings for the aircraft. Safety pilots can log PIC time and both pilots share flight costs. Post your planned flight here to find a match.
When should I post here?
- Instrument currency — need 6 approaches, holding, and course tracking in the last 6 months? Practice under the hood with a safety pilot instead of paying a CFII for every flight.
- Instrument training practice between lessons — supplement dual instruction with solo-safety-pilot reps; split the rental cost instead of covering it alone.
- Cross-country / PIC hour building — both of you can log PIC on different legs of the same flight while splitting costs.
- Night currency — need 3 full-stop landings at night in the last 90 days? Bring a safety pilot along and share the flight.
- Unfamiliar aircraft / renter's currency after a layoff — fly with another rated pilot aboard while you knock the rust off, at half the cost.
